We’ve heard it, thought it, and maybe even said it. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you don’t hurt anyone. It’s not any of your business. As long as I don’t hurt anyone, I can do whatever I want. Lots of people, Christian or not, live this way. Here’s the thing…God never said that.
The key of this message is that sin affects much more than the people around us. It hurts us deeply and it tears us away from God.
John 1:8 says that if we claim to be without sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. Every single human being on planet earth that has ever existed and that will exist prior to the return of Christ has and will continue to sin. We don’t simply make mistakes. We sin. We don’t simply fib. We lie and become a liar. We sin. We don’t simply “borrow with the intention of never giving it back.” We steal and become a thief. We sin. We candy coat these things so that we don’t have to deal with the truth and still at the same time make ourselves feel better about our sin. What a dangerous place to be in!
We need to deal honestly with who we are as people – as sinners. If we compare ourselves to the Father, we aren’t good people. We’re pretty rotten honestly. But we measure up against other fallen people and we syphon out what sin is acceptable to us and what isn’t and find our scorecard simply to say, “I am a good person.” We’re fallen and broken because of sin and we know it. The only thing that will change that is the Gospel – is Jesus Christ.
But you have to be honest with yourself. You have to identify your sin and call it out. You have to confess that sin to Jesus. You have to take a hold of it and drag it into the light so that it ban be dropped at Jesus’ feet.
You can be forgiven. You WILL be forgiven. But you must realize the weight of the sin you’re carrying around and bring it to Jesus Christ. He will set you free!
